ACUTE EXPOSURE INFORMATION

  1. Furan can cause irritation and burns to the eyes and skin, is a skin sensitizer, and is corrosive to the mouth. It is a potent CNS depressant and can induce narcosis and tonic seizures. Tachypnea, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, hypotension, pulmonary edema, and severe liver and kidney damage have occurred in experimental animals. It has been genotoxic at the level of DNA repair, mutations, and chromosome aberrations. Furan is carcinogenic in experimental animals and is a possible human carcinogen.
