ACUTE EXPOSURE INFORMATION

1. Based on animal data, the central nervous system would be the expected target organ for toxicity. A woman experienced only mild subjective impairment of sensorium after the accidental ingestion of fipronil ant bait.

2. PHARMACOLOGICAL EFFECT - Fipronil appears to have selective GABA receptor sensitivity which makes it much more toxic to insects than to vertebrates. In animal studies, the end-use product of fipronil has a low order of toxicity following oral, dermal or inhalation exposure. It is not a sensitizer.

3. ANIMAL DATA - Chronic feeding studies in rats produced the following effects: seizures (sometimes resulting in death), decreased body weight, decreased blood counts, and an alteration in biochemistry values (e.g., cholesterol, calcium, protein, thyroid hormone).
