ACUTE EXPOSURE INFORMATION
- WITH THERAPEUTIC USE
- Continued use of large doses may cause visual and acoustic hallucinations, delusions, impairment of memory, intellect, and speech, unsteady gait, tremors, anorexia, and weight loss.
- Intravenous administration of paraldehyde frequently results in thrombophlebitis. Oral and rectal administration has produced severe corrosion of the stomach and rectum.
- There is no evidence in the literature to indicate that paraldehyde is teratogenic, mutagenic, or carcinogenic.
- WITH POISONING/EXPOSURE
- Paraldehyde is irritating to the eyes, skin, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract. It may be toxic by inhalation, ingestion, dermal, intravenous, and rectal exposure.
- Paraldehyde overdose produces signs and symptoms which may include mydriasis, severe hypotension, respiratory depression, pulmonary edema, coma, cerebrovascular accident, and cardiac failure.
- In severe acute or chronic poisoning, acidosis, bleeding gastritis, muscular irritability, azotemia, oliguria, albuminuria, leukocytosis, fatty changes in the liver and kidney with toxic hepatitis and nephrosis, pulmonary hemorrhages and edema, and dilation of the right heart have been observed.
