ACUTE EXPOSURE INFORMATION

  1. Butyl acetate has low systemic toxicity. This compound is used as a synthetic-flavoring ingredient in the production of fruit flavorings, as well as in manufactured products (eg, lacquers, nail polish, photographic film). Butyl acetate has a strong fruity taste and a banana-like odor, with an odor threshold in the range of 7 parts per million (ppm) to 20 ppm. It can be irritating and narcotic in high concentrations. N-butyl acetate is more irritating than sec- or tert-butyl acetate.
  1. Possible symptoms of overexposure may include mucous membrane irritation, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, ataxia, confusion, delirium, coma, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, and dryness of the eyes, upper respiratory system and skin.
