    1. Silver nitrate is a strong mucous membrane irritant-corrosive. It has toxicity due to its silver component (argyria), its nitrate component (methemoglobinemia), and its corrosive nature.
    1. Irritant, astringent, or corrosive properties are dependent on concentration and duration of exposure.
