ACUTE EXPOSURE INFORMATION

  1. WITH POISONING/EXPOSURE
    1. RISK - Ammonium chloride is usually not a serious industrial hazard. It can produce mild irritation of the skin and respiratory tract. Systemic toxicity may occur by ingestion but is usually not severe.
    1. ROUTE - Toxicity may occur by eye, inhalation, ingestion, or skin exposure.
    1. SIGNS/SYMPTOMS - Hyperchloremic hypokalemic metabolic acidosis is the most common manifestation of systemic toxicity. Initial symptoms are nausea, vomiting, headache, progressive drowsiness, and hyperventilation. A transient diuresis may occur.
    1. PREDISPOSITION - In patients with renal or liver failure, ammonia may accumulate with symptoms of pallor, sweating, irregular respirations and/or apnea, bradycardia, and hyperreflexia.
