ACUTE EXPOSURE INFORMATION

  1. Fonofos is an organophosphate compound. The following are symptoms from organophosphates in general, which are due to the anticholinesterase activity of this class of compounds. All of these effects may not be documented for fonofos, but could potentially occur in individual cases.
    1. While not particularly irritating, fonofos instilled in the eyes of rabbits was generally fatal within 24 hours. It undergoes metabolic activation to the active corresponding oxon compound.
  1. MUSCARINIC (PARASYMPATHETIC) EFFECTS may include bradycardia, bronchospasm, bronchorrhea, salivation, lacrimation, diaphoresis, vomiting, diarrhea, and miosis. NICOTINIC (SYMPATHETIC AND MOTOR) EFFECTS may include tachycardia, hypertension, fasciculations, muscle cramps, weakness, and RESPIRATORY PARALYSIS. CENTRAL EFFECTS may include CNS depression, agitation, confusion, delirium, coma, and seizures.
  1. Children may exhibit different predominant signs and symptoms than adults: CNS depression, stupor, flaccidity, dyspnea, and coma are the most common signs in children.
