ACUTE EXPOSURE INFORMATION

  1. WITH POISONING/EXPOSURE
    1. Nitric oxide inhalation is approximately 1/5 as toxic as nitrogen dioxide. It is an inhalant toxin and is a compressed gas or vapor at normal temperatures. Human toxicity data is very limited.
    1. Initial signs/symptoms may include coughing and burning in the throat and chest, nausea, fatigue and shortness of breath.
    1. Severe exposures to nitric oxide may result in methemoglobinemia, hypoxemia, pulmonary edema, lung inflammation and decreased pulmonary vascular resistance, particularly in patients with heart disease or pulmonary hypertension.
      1. The TLV for nitric oxide is based on its ability to form methemoglobin.
    1. Nitric oxide is a skin, eye, and mucous membrane irritant.
    1. Latent symptoms may include nervousness, rapid and shallow breathing, cyanosis, mental confusion, and finally loss of consciousness.
