ACUTE EXPOSURE INFORMATION

1. OVERDOSE: Silver can be absorbed topically, through mucous membranes, by ingestion or inhalation. Small amounts of silver can be absorbed following ingestion, and it can be deposited in the lungs and skin following inhalation or dermal exposures. Silver is not acutely toxic, but some of the salts such as the oxide and nitrate are irritating or corrosive. TOPICAL: Silver used in topical antimicrobial preparations can be absorbed through open wounds and can potentially delay healing of wounds and may produce cytotoxic activity. Leukopenia, anemia, and hemorrhage have been unusual or rare complications of medicinal treatment with silver or some silver salts. RARE: Elevated liver enzymes were reported in a burn patient who was treated with silver coated wound dressings.

2. One of the most common effects of metallic silver toxicity is argyria, a blue-gray discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and conjunctiva, cornea, or lens. Other than argyria, silver appears to be of low toxicity.

3. Fibrosarcoma has been observed in rats who had silver foil imbedded in the skin.

4. Some silver salts are irritating to the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory tract.
