ACUTE EXPOSURE INFORMATION

  1. Human fatalities have occurred from tetranitromethane exposure. It is a potent irritant of the eyes and mucous membranes. Inhalation may produce respiratory tract irritation, dyspnea, bronchopneumonia, or pulmonary edema. Headache and weakness occur with chronic vapor exposure.
    1. Experimental animals have developed central nervous system damage, anemia, and fatty degeneration of the liver and kidneys from exposure. Direct skin contact may cause mild burns.
    1. Tetranitromethane occurs as an impurity in crude TNT, and is thought to be mainly responsible for that material's irritant properties.
